After giving birth to my first child, I was intrigued by the quiet magnificence, the fragile and fleeting nature of everyday life. Nothing I had seen or read on social media could even begin to describe what motherhood actually felt like. It is the most beautiful, yet most physically and emotionally challenging adventure one embarks on. The disconnect I felt to every previous expectation I had of birth, pregnancy and motherhood led me to this photo project; “Matrescence".

Through my photos, I want to show motherhood from a diverse range of angles and perspectives, and I aim to represent the different ways in which this journey can play out. Motherhood started with me searching for answers through channels that didn't serve me, and I knew that I had to use my own camera to communicate my own and others' experiences as parents.

The project aims to honour and celebrate the massive, impressive and chaotic transformation it is to enter early parenthood.
